Chainsaw Quick-Start Guide

This is a generic quick-start guide for two-stroke powered chainsaws.

Please consult the manual that came with your chainsaw for the correct fuel mixture that is supposed to be used and to familiarise yourself with the controls for your chainsaw. Your chainsaw will be very similar to the one used in this guide however, there may be small differences.

Cold starting

  • Check the chainsaw is filled with the correct fuel mix
  • Check the chain oil level is adequate to use the chainsaw
  • Engage the chain brake by pushing the guard forward towards the chainsaw blade
  • Set the ignition switch to “ l “, this is the ON position
  • Pull the choke knob fully out, this is the ON position
  • Press the primer button firmly 6 times to prime the engine carburretor with fuel
  • Place the chainsaw on the ground and secure it by placing your foot through the handle furthest away from the chainsaw blade
  • Pull the starter cord 4 times (it will not start at this stage). PLEASE NOTE – 4 times only
  • Cancel the choke by pressing the choke knob back in
  • Pull the starter cord again until the engine starts
  • Allow the engine to run for 10-15 seconds on fast tickover, then press down the interlock lever and pull up the throttle trigger lever to cancel fast tickover
  • Disengage the chain brake by pulling it backwards away from the chainsaw blade

Warm starting

  • Engage the chain brake by pushing the guard forward towards the chainsaw blade
  • Set the ignition switch to “ l “, this is the ON position
  • Pull the choke knob fully out, this is the ON position
  • Cancel the choke by pressing the choke knob back in. This sets the throttle to fast tickover ready for starting
  • Place the chainsaw on the ground and secure it by placing your foot through the handle furthest away from the chainsaw blade
  • Pull the starter cord until the engine starts
  • Allow the engine to run for 10-15 seconds on fast tickover, then press down the interlock lever and pull up the throttle trigger lever to cancel fast tickover
  • Disengage the chain brake by pulling it backwards away from the chainsaw blade

Stopping the engine

  • Release the throttle trigger and interlock lever and let the engine idle for a few seconds
  • Move the ignition switch to “ 0 “, this is the OFF position
  • The engine will now stop.
