May Gardening Jobs: Let’s Celebrate Spring in Your Garden!

Hello, gardening enthusiasts!

May has arrived, and it’s time to let your garden shine in full spring glory. The weather is warming up, the flowers are bursting into bloom, and everything is looking lush and green. It’s the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into some key gardening jobs.

From lawn care to planting and everything in between, here’s what you should be doing in your garden this month!

1. Lawn Care: Keep It Fresh and Healthy
Your lawn is well and truly awake now, so it’s time to give it the care it deserves. May is the perfect month to mow your lawn regularly—about once a week—keeping the grass nice and neat. Make sure you’re not cutting it too short, though. Aim for a height of about 2.5 inches to encourage strong, healthy growth.

If you haven’t already, it’s a great time to apply a light feed to your lawn to help it thrive. And if you’ve spotted any weeds or moss creeping in, now’s the time to tackle them. You can also aerate your lawn by spiking it with a fork or using a lawn aerator if you have one—this will help water and nutrients reach the roots more easily.

2. Plant Summer Bedding Plants
May is prime time for planting all your favourite summer flowers! Bedding plants like petunias, begonias, and geraniums can be planted out now that the risk of frost is pretty much behind us (fingers crossed!). These beauties will give you a garden full of colour all season long.

If you’re growing flowers from seed, it’s also time to get them in the ground. Things like cosmos, sunflowers, and marigolds will thrive when directly sown into the soil. And don’t forget to water them regularly as they establish themselves!

3. Sow Veggies and Herbs
It’s time to get serious about veggies in May! You can start sowing all kinds of crops directly into the garden now, including beans, courgettes, cucumbers, and peas. If you’ve been growing seedlings indoors, harden them off by gradually exposing them to the outdoors over the next week or two before planting them in their final spots.

May is also an excellent month to sow herbs like basil, coriander, and dill. Fresh herbs are perfect for cooking and having them right in your garden makes them easy to grab whenever you need them.

4. Tidy Up and Deadhead
Your garden is likely looking fabulous with flowers in full bloom, but don’t forget to keep it neat and tidy. Deadheading spent blooms from spring-flowering plants, like daffodils and tulips, will encourage more flowers to appear. It also keeps your garden looking fresh!

Give your borders and beds a quick weed, too. A bit of weeding now will save you a lot of work later in the season. And while you’re at it, keep an eye on any early summer shrubs you may need to prune to keep them in shape.

5. Protect Your Plants
As the weather warms up, pests are becoming more active. Keep an eye out for aphids, slugs, and snails, which can wreak havoc on your young plants. Try using natural pest control methods like introducing ladybugs for aphids or using slug pellets (organic ones if possible) to protect your tender crops.

You might also want to start applying a layer of mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and suppress those pesky weeds. Plus, it’ll give your garden a tidy, professional look!

6. Support Your Climbers
If you’ve planted any climbing plants like sweet peas, beans, or clematis, now’s the time to give them some support. Install trellises or stakes to help guide their growth and keep them from getting tangled up. They’ll be much happier climbing upwards rather than flopping around the garden!

May is all about enjoying the fruits of your labour as your garden bursts into life. Whether you’re tending to your lawn, planting vibrant flowers, or sowing tasty veggies, there’s no better time to get stuck in. So, grab your gardening gloves, enjoy the sunshine, and let’s make this a month of growth and blooming beauty! 🌷🌿🌞
